Your First Acupuncture Appointment: What to Expect
If you're considering acupuncture for the first time, you may be wondering what to expect. That's completely normal. Whether you're seeking relief from pain, managing stress, recovering from an injury, or looking for support with a chronic health condition, my goal is to make your first visit comfortable, informative, and personalized.
At Savasta Acupuncture, I believe the best care begins with listening. Every patient has a unique story, and every treatment plan is tailored to the individual—not just the symptoms.
Before Your Appointment
To help you get the most out of your visit, I recommend:
Eating a light meal or snack beforehand (avoid coming on an empty stomach).
Wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that can be rolled above the elbows and knees if needed.
Bringing a list of any medications or supplements you take, if applicable.
Taking a few moments to think about your health concerns, goals, and any questions you'd like to ask.
We'll Start with a Conversation
Your first appointment generally lasts 90 minutes, giving us plenty of time to discuss your health history, perform a thorough assessment, answer your questions, and complete your first treatment without feeling rushed.
We'll discuss:
Your primary concerns and symptoms
When they began and how they've changed over time
Your medical history
Current medications and supplements
Sleep, digestion, stress, and energy levels
Lifestyle and daily habits
Your goals for treatment
Traditional Chinese Medicine views the body as an interconnected whole. Even if you're coming in for shoulder pain or migraines, I may ask questions about your digestion, sleep, stress, or other aspects of your health. These details help identify patterns and guide a treatment plan that's designed specifically for you.
Most importantly, I want to hear your story. You'll always have time to ask questions, discuss your concerns, and feel heard throughout your visit.
Your Assessment
Depending on your symptoms, your evaluation may include:
Traditional pulse assessment
Tongue observation
Gentle palpation of your abdomen or areas of tension or tenderness
Orthopedic or range-of-motion testing when appropriate
These findings help me better understand what's contributing to your symptoms and allow me to create the most appropriate treatment for your individual needs.
Your Acupuncture Treatment
After your consultation, we'll begin your treatment.
Acupuncture needles are extremely thin—much finer than those used for injections or blood draws. Most people are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable acupuncture feels. You may notice a brief sensation as a needle is inserted, followed by feelings of warmth, heaviness, tingling, or deep relaxation.
I practice both Chinese and Japanese acupuncture and select the approach that best fits your unique needs. Depending on your condition, your treatment may also include complementary therapies such as cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, electroacupuncture, auriculotherapy, Tui Na, scalp acupuncture, or other techniques that support your care.
Once the needles are in place, you'll rest comfortably for about 20 to 30 minutes. Many patients find this to be the most relaxing part of their day—and it's not uncommon to drift off to sleep.
After Your Treatment
Everyone responds a little differently to acupuncture.
After your appointment, you may feel:
Deeply relaxed
Calm and clear-headed
Energized
Gradual improvement in your symptoms over the next day or two
Some people notice positive changes after their first visit, while others experience more gradual improvement over several treatments. Occasionally, you may have mild soreness or temporary fatigue after treatment, but these effects are typically short-lived.
I recommend drinking plenty of water, listening to your body, and giving yourself a little extra time to rest if possible after your appointment.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The answer depends on your individual health concerns, how long you've been experiencing symptoms, and your treatment goals.
Some conditions respond quickly, while others—especially chronic or long-standing issues—benefit from a series of treatments. Together, we'll discuss a treatment plan that's realistic, personalized, and designed to help you achieve lasting results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does acupuncture hurt?
This is one of the most common questions I hear! Acupuncture needles are incredibly thin—much finer than those used for injections or blood draws. While you may feel a brief sensation as a needle is inserted, most patients find acupuncture to be very comfortable and deeply relaxing. Many even fall asleep during treatment.
Should I eat before acupuncture?
Yes. I recommend eating a light meal or snack before your appointment. Coming on an empty stomach may increase the likelihood of feeling lightheaded during treatment. Staying well hydrated before and after your visit is also encouraged.
What should I wear?
Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal. Many acupuncture points are located on the arms and legs, so clothing that can be rolled above the elbows and knees is especially helpful. If access to another area is needed, I'll simply ask you to adjust your clothing as needed while ensuring your comfort and privacy throughout your treatment.
I Look Forward to Meeting You
